First of all, a crown is a cap that fits over a tooth to restore a break, crack, or large area of decay. Crowns allow you to keep your natural tooth root, which is usually a more desirable option than extracting the tooth and replacing it with a prosthetic. Crowns can also anchor a bridge and strengthen a tooth that has been treated with a root canal.
When you visit us for your crown appointment, Dr. Edderai will prepare your tooth by removing the decay (if applicable) and reshaping the tooth to allow room for the crown. Then, he'll scan the tooth and wirelessly send the information to the CEREC CAD/CAM machine. With this machine, he'll make a 3D model of the crown and mill a metal-free restoration while you wait. Once the final crown is ready, he'll cement it to your tooth in the same appointment.
In some cases, Dr. Edderai may recommend a lab-made crown. Back teeth, which withstand tremendous biting forces, often require metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns.
